Learn What NOT to DO When Getting Started
The information you are about to read will accelerate your learning curve exponentially. The 10 mistakes that I am about to list here and describe in detail are mistakes that some of the best Affiliate Marketers have made. And I have listed them so that you do not make the same mistakes.
Interestingly enough, although I am listing these mistake, I am asking you not to make the same mistakes that me and many other like me have made, you may be tempted to make them anyway. That’s just how strong the desire to succeed is, in many of us. We tell ourselves that even though many before us have learned from these mistakes, you may just have to learn for yourself.
Here they are, The Top 10 mistakes that most Niche Website Newbies make:
Mistake Number 1: Getting Distracted – “Oh my, What’s that over there?” We call it the “shiny object syndrome” and it can be a real progress killer. Please keep one thing in mind as you read this paragraph, I highly recommend that you do research on everything that I say. In fact, I have offered you my “Cheat Sheets” for the best places to find information regarding SEO and Affiliate Marketing, BUT once you pick a path, stay as focused as possible on that path alone.
I recommend that you spend the majority of your time creating content for your ONE business. Once you build that business into a passive income, into a self-sustaining entity, then you can move on to “scale” your business into an empire.
There are many sales people out there who will tell you that they have the shortcut, the latest and the greatest formula for making money online, for creating an online business. Well I can tell you that the only formula that works is to create content, build traffic, gain trust and optimize your website. You simply cannot argue that point.
Mistake Number 2: Working on Multiple Websites at one time – OK, I’m guilty of this one myself. It makes perfect sense, if you can make $500 per month with one website, then 4 websites must be better, right?
I truly thought I had this figured out. If everyone I knew was working on just one website, I was going to work on 4 and at the end of the day, I would be making 4x the money. Hmm…. Well it didn’t work out that way. What actually happened is that I was making 1/4th of the money that they were.
You simply cannot work at a pace that supports multiple websites, IN THE BEGINNING. We will discuss ways that you can accelerate growth, once you have built a firm foundation and once you have learned how this business works, but until then your best chance to be successful is to focus on ONE website, Trust Me.
Mistake Number 3: Focusing on Quantity, not Quality – This is a huge mistake. Brian Dean, founder of Backlinko and one of my all-time favorite Gurus, said it best “Create Complete Content”, as he described in an email. You will learn much more about Brian later, but just know that many wealthy people listen him, perhaps we should too.
If you continue to read this website, learn from me or join Wealthy Affiliate, as I suggest, you will be encouraged to create content at a feverish pace. This is true, but I strongly suggest that you do not sacrifice Quality for Quantity. If you need to make the choice between the two, always err on the side of Quality. Take the time to create quality content.
Mistake Number 4: Neglecting Social Media – When I first started building traffic for my websites, I was a Social Media infant. For me, Facebook was a birthday reminder program for my friends and family. I had only seen Pinterest briefly and had zero experience with either Instagram or Twitter.
I found out pretty quickly that my Social Media knowledge had to change and change quickly. The point is that marketing on Social Media is rapidly becoming an excellent way to drive traffic to your website. Likely to soon be second only to Organic traffic as one of the more economical means of attracting visitors.
One word of caution to Newbies, though, all the Social Media outlets do have version of “PAID” marketing and will pressure you to “get seen by more people” as you grow you social media presence.
Mistake Number 5: Not Getting the Proper Training – You have heard me say it and I will say it again, you need to get the proper training. Yes, I believe that this website is a very good place to start, but I cannot give you the day to day guidance you need from this platform.
Look around the Internet, do a search for Online Training Programs. Do some research and make a sound decision regarding a comprehensive training platform for starting an online business. I will always recommend that you take a path that makes you feel comfortable. You will likely experience some doubt as you continue to build your business, and the money does not start pouring in right away. So it is best that you start your journey on firm ground.
Wealthy Affiliate is our recommended Training Platform for two reasons: The first reason is that it’s the best. Not only is it the best value, but it is truly the best program out there. But don’t take my word for it, check around.
The next reason that Wealthy Affiliate is our Number One Recommended Training Platform is that I am there. When you sign up for WA, I will find you almost immediately and you will be directly in touch with me, I will be your mentor. An my job will be to show you around, provide guidance and keep you motivated.
You may ask, Why I am so interested in your success? Solid question, no doubt about it.
Two reasons, first I am an Associate for WA and will make a commission when you sign up. Just as you will become an Associate for WA the moment you sign up (and yes you will earn commission when you refer others) even if you are a FREE STARTER.
The second reason that I am interested in your success, is that when I make you successful, we will become stronger together. It is in my best interest to make you successful and team with you to make both of us stronger together. The bottom line is that it all starts with the training.
Mistake Number 6 : Not treating your Business, like a Business – This is most likely the biggest reason that people fail to achieve success online. Mistake number 6 will transition into Mistake number 7, but essentially we need to give this initiative the attention it deserves. Establishing yourself as an Authority online and creating a business that will support your family is serious stuff and should be treated as such.
Unfortunately many Newbies treat this more like a “hobby”, then a business. I have never been able to figure that out. Now don’t get me wrong, I could probably use to get a little better organized myself. But I was “hungry” enough to take the advice of some very successful people and treat my business, like a business.
Mistake Number 7: Not making sufficient investment – As mentioned, this mistake is a continuation from Mistake number 6. I firmly believe that a big reason for treating this as a “hobby” comes from the lack of capital investment, yes money. For example, if you were to invest your life savings into opening up a Dunkin’ Doughnuts, how much blood, sweat and tears would you be willing to spend, knowing that your life savings was at stake?
I’m guessing you would work your ass off, trying to make that Dunkin’ Doughnuts the best damn DD around. So why not provide the same level of drive and desire into your online business? Most likely the answer is a lack of investment.
It is important to remember that “investment” doesn’t just come in the form of cash. An investment can come in the form of any type of resource, such as time and effort. I have already told you that starting an online business does not need to cost a ton of money, but you can and should make a substantial investment in one form or another.
Mistake Number 8: Monetizing too Early – There are some very concrete reasons to wait before monitoring your website. Two of the more important reasons are Affiliate Rules and Visitor Trust.
One very common problem that Newbie Amazon Affiliate Marketers face is the probationary 180 day period in which you are expected to make three qualifying sales. Amazon is one of the largest companies on the planet and is one of the more popular affiliate programs on the planet.
When you sign up as an Amazon Associate, which is very easy to do, you start a 180 day timer. Amazon expects you to make 3 qualifying sales in those first 180 days in order to be approved as an Amazon Associate. Now the world does not come to an end, if you do not meet that goal, but you will need to re-apply and make changes to your website.
Waiting until you have a fair amount of traffic before you sign up will give you a better chance of achieving the 3 sales. Some Affiliate Programs have minimum traffic guidelines and still others have rules against websites being “under construction” before you can be approved.
The other reason, I mentioned above, is visitor trust. You are going to be tasked with creating value for your visitors or solving a problem for you visitors. If you can do that, then your visitors will stick around, on your website and they will visit again. This happens when you establish trust with your customers and when they trust you, they will buy from you.
Mistake Number 9: Keyword Stuffing – You may not be familiar with the term, but keyword stuffing is a bad thing. This can be a confusing subject for many Newbie Website Owners. You will hear me tell you that Google looks for keywords on your website and Google will send visitors to your website based on the keywords they find there.
So “Ipso Facto, More is Better” right? Nope! More means nothing. If you are interested in ranking for the keyword: Baltimore, Maryland, it will not benefit you to use the city and state’s names 75 times throughout your article. If you simply include the city and state in your title, then talk about crabs, the Orioles, the Ravens and the Inner Harbor, Google will know what you are talking about, trust me.
Mistake Number 10: Not Getting Personal and Not Starting an Email List – So for Number 10, I’m going to give you 2 for 1. But I don’t want you to focus on either of these two mistakes early on.
For now, let’s just say that you will want to create a connection with your customers. It helps when they can relate to you and your situation. So do not hesitate to let your visitors know who you are and why you are an expert in your niche.
I have seen Newbies, who are deathly afraid of putting themselves out there on day 1, who are posting You Tube Videos in the first year. Building yourself into a “brand” is a very powerful thing within Affiliate Marketing.
Lastly, don’t let too many visitors get away early on. When you learn how to collect analytics about your website, you will find that 1 or 2 people are visiting your site each day. Then it will become 10 to 20 a day, then 100 to 200 and soon it will be 1000 to 2000, each of these visitors a potential future customer.
You will want to be capable of offering these potential customers a reason to come back. And you cannot do that if you do not know who they are and how to find them. This is easily solved by collecting their email addresses.
We will discuss several methods of collect email addresses, but for now, just remember to do this sooner rather than later.
