Better Question – What is Niche Marketing?

We should probably spend some time discussing, exactly “What is a Niche Website?”  And as part of that discussion we will tackle the bigger question of “What is Niche Marketing?”. As I promised, I am going to keep the information on this website at a beginner’s level, however, you should prepare yourself to be a business owner.  And as the owner of a business, you should have a firm grip on what you are trying to accomplish.

What is Niche Markeing, What is a Niche WebsiteIn this article you are going to learn about Niches, about Niche Websites and about Niche Products.  And when you build a niche website to sell niche products you are doing niche marketing, it’s that simple.

Do not over complicate the terms here, we are simply describing the audience that you will be selling products to and it doesn’t have to be any more complicated than that.

Special Inside Glimpse at Wealthy Affiliate: What is Niche Marketing, by Robert A

Let’s start with the definition of the word niche, straight from Merriam-Webster:

“Denoting or relating to products, services, or interests that appeal to a small, specialized section of the population.”

And we can follow that up with the definition of “Marketing” from the same source:

“the action or business of promoting and selling products or services”

So when we talk about a niche website, we are referring to any website that is created to provide a product or service to a select group of people (customers).  And Niche Marketing is simply selling products to that specialized or select group of people.  Those people could be fishing enthusiasts, dieters, bankers or nurses, it doesn’t matter.

What is Niche MarketingBTW, you will notice that I very often place the word “customers” in parenthesis when discussing visitors to your website. This is not because I think you don’t understand; it’s because I always want you to remember that those visitors are your customers.

And as such they should be treated like customers and your website should provide what the customer wants. That is how you sell and that is how you make money.

Anyway, if I am creating a website that sells stethoscopes, I may want to target doctors as my customers. And just that quick we have created a niche idea with a niche audience.

(Niche Idea/Product = Stethoscopes and Niche Audience  = Doctors)

Now later you will learn that perhaps this niche should not be as specific as stethoscopes, but bit broader. As an example, I may choose to create a website that sells medical accessories, this will allow me to have a greater selection of products and perhaps even a larger group of customers.

Can’t think of a niche?

Selecting a niche is one of the many challenges that people face when starting an online business. The reality is that most folks put way too much thought into their selection.

Let’s take a look at a few of the questions people consider as they decide on a niche:

  • Is there too much competition already?
  • Do I know anything about the niche?
  • Where do I get products to sell for my niche?

Now, I recommend that you select a niche that you are familiar with, but you can certainly learn about any niche if you wish to select one that is outside of your personal experience. Staying with a niche that interests you, might provide motivation for you to learn more about the topic and better help your customers at the same time.

Over 100 Niche Ideas for you to Choose From!

Remember the objective is to provide information to your customers.  If you can provide value, customers will visit your website and they will purchase products.

Let’s look at our favorite example… Stethoscopes, the National Center for Health Workforce Analysis reported in 2017 that the number of Registered Nurses will skyrocket through the 2020s and reach 3.6 million by 2030, an increase of 28.4%.

That is a lot of nurses and they are goint to need stethoscopes. They will also need scrubs and shoes and much, much more. As you can see, in a matter of a few moments we have created a basic business plan for a niche website. We have our products, we have our audience and we have the evidence we need to support our effort. All in just a few minutes.

Let’s Slow Down for a Minute…

As a newbie, who is looking to create “real” income from the internet you are going to need 3 things. And those three things are:

A WEBSITE, a PRODUCT or PRODUCTS and VISITORS/CUSTOMERS

Now I will guarantee you that the first one is a breeze, building a website is not as difficult as you might think and I am here to help you with that.  In fact, if you find that creating a website is just not your cup of tea, then I will build it for you (for a small fee of course).  It’s up to you, but I will show you step by step how to do it and be here for you when you need help.

OK, so now that we have a website, we are going to need something to sell???

Well turns out that this part is easy too, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.  First thing we need to do is determine what kind of product or service we want to sell.

That’s right I said, SERVICE, you can very easily sell a service with your website.  In fact I offered to build you a website, didn’t I?  That’s a service.

Let’s just spend one quick minute on the idea of selling a service.  Of course If you are selling to local people, you could sell dog walking or painting services.

And if you wanted to sell to anyone on the internet you could sell any of the following:

Niche Websites - Typing Services

  • Typing Services
  • Writing Blog Posts
  • Managing Pinterest Accounts
  • Creating Graphics
  • Proof Reading
  • Data Entry
  • Editing Videos or Music
  • Computer Programming
  • And much, much, much more

Personally I would only focus on selling services, IF you were looking to supplement your Affiliate Marketing income.  Your primary focus should be on creating a “passive income” and if you have not yet learned what a passive income means:

Please visit our “Creating a Passive Income” Page

Learning to generate a passive income has much more of an UP SIDE, than sell something as concrete as a service.  For example, if you were to freelance blog creation and sold your services for $100 per 1500 word blog post and it took you 4 hours to research and create a 1500 word blog post, then you could conceivably make $200 in an 8 hour day.

Now if you were to create an Affiliate Marketing website that generates $200 per day with little or no interaction on your part, then you could spend those 8 hours on creating another Affiliate Marketing website that also generates $200 per day. It’s a matter of scale and selling products is much easier to scale then services.

Let’s Re-Group and get back to Niche Websites

We were discussing the 3 things everyone needs when creating a niche website, The Site, Products and Visitors. I had informed you that building a website is not a big deal and promised you that I would help you build yours step by step. So that leaves us with the product??

Niche website to sell affiliate products - StethoscopesSo, assuming that you are not an inventor and have your own products to sell, I guess you are going to have to sell someone else’s product.  And this is where the “Affiliate” term comes into play with Niche Websites.

Let’s revisit our example from above, if I was to create a niche website to sell medical accessories. Let’s say stethoscopes and clothing to medical professionals, I would need a source for my products. I would need someone who would allow me to sell their products and make a commission when I sell something.  Those people are called “Affiliates” and the programs they use to accommodate this process are called “Affiliate Programs”.

Where do I find Affiliate Programs?

Here again, I have promised you that his part would be easy.  So to prove my point, I ask that you type “medical supply affiliate programs” into Google.  If you follow my instructions, you very quicly found over 10 Affilaite Programs, selling hundreds and hundreds of products, including stethoscopes.  Now can it get any easier than that?

Let’s take a minute to catch up.  By now, we have a website and a host of products to sell.  The only thing left to do is to attract some visitors (customers) to our website and the money starts rolling in, right??  Well yes, in a sense, but the problem is that no one knows that our website exists and the only way we are going to let them know is through marketing.

This is Where we Answer the Question:

What is Niche Marketing?

As we are focusing on the definition of things in this article, we can use the definition of Niche Marketing from BusinessDictionary.com,  As seen on their website:

Concentrating all marketing efforts on a small but specific and well defined segment of the population. Niches do not ‘exist’ but are ‘created’ by identifying needs, wants, and requirements that are being addressed poorly or not at all by other firms, and developing and delivering goods or services to satisfy them.

And with a slight variation for the true Newbies in the room, Niche marketing is addressing the needs of a select group by providing information and products that make their life easier.

And now your mission should be clear.  Within the 1600 or so words of this article, you have the blueprint for creating a successful Niche Website.  You have a strong foundation on which a sustainable and scalable full time income can be built.  If you want step by step instructions on how to make this happen, with a community of like minded people to guide you and a personal coach to get you through the difficult times, REVIEW THIS:

  1. Hello Glenn, thank you so much for this post, it has really been of good help. I can’t really seem to pick a niche for myself since I joined Wealthy Affiliate a while back.

I am trying to juxtapose between what I love and where I can make me some money, I think I’ll check out that list of niches you posted. Thanks again.

    1. Thank you so much for reaching out,

Selecting a niche can be very challenging, but as I mention in the article, don’t get too “caught up” in the selection process.  I firmly believe that you will have several niches before you are working full time with your online business.

The process early on is to select a niche, develop a keyword list, do some keyword research and then write content based on the keywords you have selected.

Once you get good at that process, you can find the niche that works best for you and focus on that single website.

I hope this helped, Good luck, Glenn

  2. Thank you so much for this beautiful post concerning niche websites wow! This has really simplified my worldview concerning creating niche website and marketing and I have found this very handy. Now, I know of a better way to major my interest in creating a niche website. Thanks

    1. Thank you for your comment,

And I’m glad the article could help with your niche selection process. One topic that I do not go into great detail about in the article is choosing a niche based on the product or products you plan to sell. This article is intended for the beginner, so I try to keep this on an introductory level.

But, as you get deeper into your niche selection process you will want to consider the product you intend to sell. If your niche is “cross stitching patterns” which sell for $20 and you only make 8 percent commission, then you can quickly see that you will need to sell a lot of patterns to make a significant income.

On the other hand, if you sell golf clubs at $400 per set, you will make a much more on a single sale.  I know this is a bit more advanced, but I like to provide those who comment with more detail on the topic, so as I said, I’m glad it helped and please send me any other questions you might have.

Best of luck on your pending business, Glenn
